The harness stays where it is

The usual routine with dog clothing: take the harness off, put the overall on, put the harness back over the top. It rubs, it takes time, and in the rain you are stuck doing it at the front door.

This overall has three openings. Two sit hidden in the back pocket and lead straight to the attachment ring of the harness. They work with different harness models and ring positions. A third opening sits at the collar and leads to the dog's collar.

So your dog wears the harness as always, under the overall. You clip the lead on from the outside. No changing, no rubbing, nothing to take off before the walk.

The Mini-Fit that fits dachshunds

The Mini-Fit is developed for dachshund proportions: more back length, room for the deep chest, short overall legs. At the chest and belly sits an elastic performance knit. It gives where the ribcage is strong, holds its shape and leaves full freedom for walking, running and digging.

The knitted belly panel has its own curve, so the belly stays covered and the cut also sits well on male dogs. The knitted leg cuffs can be rolled up. That way the overall also fits dogs with very short legs, without fabric falling over the paws.

Tried on by around 100 dachshunds

Before production there was a fitting day with all six sizes. Around 100 dachshunds tried the overall on, from puppies to fully grown large dachshunds, plus dachshund mixes and dogs of other small breeds.

That is where the size grading came from. The six sizes are calculated for dachshund proportions: long spine, deep chest, short legs. The cut is laid out so that many other small breeds fit too, without the fit for dachshunds suffering.

It keeps them warm, does not restrict them and feels cosy. The knitted leg cuffs can be rolled up so that very short legs stay free.

What the overall does

• Three lead access points. Two hidden openings in the back pocket for the harness, one opening at the collar for the dog's collar.
• A back pocket with a job. The harness sits neatly under the overall and the handle stays within reach.
• Reflective piping on the back pocket, exactly where drivers look first.
• Loop for an LED clip light on the back pocket. The overall does not light up by itself, the piping throws back light that falls on it.
• Cuffs you can roll up for extra short legs.
• Elastic performance knit at the chest and belly: shape-stable, breathable, quick-drying.
• Pull-on design without a zip. Over the head, legs in, done.

How to spot a good sherpa overall

Sherpa overalls all look similar in product photos. The differences show up in daily use, when you put it on, when you clip the lead in and after the third wash. These eight points decide whether an overall gets worn every day or stays in the cupboard.

These dogs wear these sizes

Six sizes sounds like few, but they cover the whole range, from a long-haired dachshund puppy to a sturdy dachshund mix. Here are real dogs with their real measurements. Compare them with your dog.

Size chart

The key measurement is the back length, measured from the shoulder blade to the base of the tail. Chest girth and neck girth are there as a check. The total length is the length of the overall from the collar down, without the collar. All measurements in cm.

Weight roughly 3 to 15 kg, depending on dachshund size, build or mix. What counts are the measurements, not the weight.

How the overall looks on a dog

The cut sits close to the body without pulling. The teddy sherpa gives the overall volume across the back, the smooth knit at the chest and belly takes it back again. So the dog does not look packed up, it looks dressed.

The colour is built in two parts: a creamy base tone with a set contrast on cuffs, collar and piping. The roll neck stands up a little and frames the head. In Royal Rosewood the contrast is warm and calm, in Royal Alpine it is clear and urban.

That is a deliberate decision against beige and grey. No loud effects, but also no dog that disappears into November fog.

Which dogs the overall is made for

For dachshunds and small dogs with short legs and a long or deep-chested build. In other words, exactly the dogs that standard sizes rarely fit.

There is a size for every dachshund variety: miniature dachshund, rabbit dachshund, standard dachshund, wire-haired, short-haired and long-haired dachshund. Just as suitable for small breeds with a similar build: Jack Russell Terrier, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, small poodles and toy poodles, Maltipoo, Cavapoo, Cockapoo, Maltese and many small mixed breeds with short legs.

For larger breeds and sighthounds there is the same cut as the THE SPORT RACER dog jumper in the Sherpa Edition with twelve sizes and back lengths from 31 to 68 cm.

Both models have been tried on many breeds. The cut is developed so that it fits poodles, terriers, sighthounds and many mixed breeds alongside dachshunds, without the fit for dachshunds suffering.

If your dachshund does not like overalls

Not every dog enjoys having its hind legs dressed. Some stand still while you put it on, others walk the first few metres unsure of themselves. For these dogs there is the same teddy sherpa as a jumper: THE SPORT RACER dog jumper (Sherpa Edition).

At the front, cuffs close around the forelegs, the belly stays covered, hind legs and tail stay completely free. It goes on in seconds. The same applies to male and female dogs: nothing is in the way at the back.

Material and care

Material: 100 % polyester as teddy sherpa, fluffy and warm. At the chest and belly an elastic performance knit, also polyester and breathable, gives freedom of movement. 100 % vegan. Designed in our studio in Hamburg, produced in premium manufacturers that also make clothing and home textiles for babies and toddlers.

Care: Machine washable at 30°C on a delicate cycle, ideally in the wash bag. Mild detergent for coloureds, no fabric softener, no bleach. Dry flat in the air. For soil, mud or grass stains a little vegan gall soap for coloureds is usually enough.

What people ask most before buying

Should the harness be worn over or under the dog overall?

Under the overall. That is exactly what the two hidden openings in the back pocket are for: the harness stays on the dog, the attachment ring is led out through the opening and you clip the lead in there. If the harness sits over the clothing, it rests on the fabric instead of the body and pulls it into folds.

Which dog overall has an opening for the harness?

Is the sherpa overall waterproof?

No. It keeps a dog warm, but it is not wet-weather protection. On cold rainy days you combine both: overall underneath, raincoat on top.

Are dachshunds sensitive to cold?

Many dachshunds get cold sooner than larger dogs. Short coat, little undercoat and, because of the short legs, hardly any distance from the cold, wet ground. Typical signs are shivering, curling up, walking more slowly and a clear wish to go home again.

At what temperatures should a dog wear an overall?

Every dog feels the cold differently. Young and old dogs get cold faster, as do dogs with little undercoat. As a guide from our advice desk: from around 10°C the overall is right, earlier in wind and wet. You can tell your dog is cold from shivering, curling up, walking more slowly and the wish to go home again.

Is this a dog overall with legs?

My dachshund does not like overalls. Is there an alternative?

How do I put the overall on?

Pull-on style, without a zip. First the head goes through, then the two front paws, then you pull the overall over the back, and last the hind legs go in. Take your time and reward in between. From the second time on, your dog understands what is happening.
