Dachshunds in winter: choosing a dachshund coat, jumper and belly cover

Dachshunds often get cold faster in winter than other dogs. Their long back, short legs and low belly mean that cold, snow, mud and spray reach the chest and belly very quickly. A good dachshund coat or dachshund jumper is therefore not a fashion extra, it is practical protection for cold days.

Why winter clothing makes sense for dachshunds

Dachshunds walk close to the ground. Belly and chest sit far nearer to snow, mud and cold wet than on long-legged dogs. Many dachshunds also have little undercoat. If your dog shivers, gets very cold, suddenly moves differently or shows pain, please also speak to your vet. Clothing is no substitute for a medical check.

Which size does my dachshund need in winter?

Measure the back length from the shoulder blade to the base of the tail, the chest girth at the widest point behind the front legs, and the neck girth where the coat or jumper should sit. If your dachshund sits between two back lengths, also look at how the tail is carried day to day: with a tail that is often held up, the shorter version is usually more comfortable.
